Aaron Dolman is a drummer born and based in Montreal who is rapidly establishing himself in the city’s diverse musical scenes. Having performed with many notable North American Jazz musicians, including André White, Dan Faulk, Kevin Dean, Jean-Michel Pilc, Mike Rud and Joshua Rager, as well as members of Canada’s diverse folk music scene, such as Connie Kaldor and Hart-Rouge, he is equally at home performing in contemporary Jazz and experimental musical contexts as he is in Folk, Rock and Pop settings.
Aaron is currently involved in a diverse array of musical projects. His most recent, Music for 20 Strings, is a 5-piece chamber-folk ensemble made up of two guitars, viola, acoustic bass and drums that draws on both a deep love of folk music as well as creative improvised musical traditions. The group's debut EP can be heard here. He also leads the jazz quintet, The Love Songs Group and is a core member of the experimental rock / electronic / jazz group Fox Club, as well as Julian Jayme’s jazz-folk septet, City Folk. Between 2017 and 2019, Aaron was also an active musical member - as well as research assistant - in Jean-Michel Pilc’s Improv Workshop Project (which you can check out here).
Aaron holds a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Performance from McGill University, where he was a member of the school's flagship ensemble, the Jazz Orchestra 1, led by Christine Jensen. In 2019 he was chosen to accompany the school's Catherine Thornhill Steele Guest Artist, acclaimed Jazz trumpeter and composer Ambrose Akinmusire. Aaron has also been the recipient of a number of awards and scholarships, including the Lou Williamson Jazz Award (2017), The Schulich School of Music Award for Outstanding Achievement in Performance (2017), as well as three Schulich School of Music Scholarships (2016, 2017, 2018).
Aaron has performed at The Montreal International Jazz Festival, the Toronto Undergraduate Jazz Festival, the “Live From the Rock” Folk Festival and Sudbury's “Northern Lights” Folk Festival, amongst other Jazz and Folk festivals across Canada. When home in Montreal, Aaron is a coveted sideman and performs regularly at many of Montreal's local clubs, cafés and performance spaces.
